Labor-only moving when you have the truck
Labor-only loading or unloading in San Diego runs $120 to $180 per hour for a 2-mover crew with a 2-hour minimum, typically finishing in 2 to 3 hours per truck. We load U-Hauls, Penskes, PODS, U-Boxes, and rental box trucks with the same pad-wrapping and stacking technique we'd use on our own truck. We don't drive your rental: driving a rental for hire is a separate regulatory category we don't operate under.
What's included in this service?
- Loading rental box trucks (U-Haul, Penske, Budget) with proper weight distribution
- Loading PODS and U-Box containers (we know the dimensions and stack accordingly)
- Unloading at destination only (you drove the truck, we put it in the right rooms)
- Pad-wrapping and shrink-wrapping included, you bring or rent the pads
- Disassembly of beds, tables, and IKEA on request
- Heavy-item-only labor (gun safe, piano, hot tub) with the right crew size
When do you need this service?
- You rented a U-Haul to save money but cannot lift the dresser by yourself
- A POD is in your driveway and you have 4 days to fill it
- You're driving cross-country yourself but want pros to load
- A friend bailed on helping you move and the truck is already paid for
- You only need help with the heavy stuff (3-piece sectional, fridge, peloton)
What do homeowners ask about Labor-Only?
Why will not you drive the U-Haul for me?
California regulations distinguish between for-hire household goods carriers (transporting your goods on their truck under their authority) and labor (loading or unloading a vehicle you control). Driving your rental on a for-hire basis requires a different operating authority. It's a real regulatory line, not red tape.
How do I load a U-Haul properly?
Heaviest items in first against the cab wall (washer, dryer, fridge, dressers). Long flat items (mattresses, headboards, mirrors) against the side walls. Boxes filling the void on top of and around the heavy stuff. Lighter, fragile items last and on top. Tie down every 4 feet using the rails. We can do all of that for you in 2 to 3 hours.
Can I rent pads from you for the labor-only job?
Yes. Most rental trucks come with no pads or with thin disposables that fall apart. We bring our pads at $5 each per move and shrink-wrap at cost. Or we'll use the pads you got from U-Haul if you'd rather. Tell us at booking so we know what to bring.
How does this compare to a full-service move price-wise?
Labor-only is usually 30 to 50 percent cheaper than a full-service move because you're paying for the rental, fuel, and driving. The breakeven on a local move is typically a 1-bedroom with under 1,500 lbs: at that size, the U-Haul rental + labor often beats our full hourly. Larger homes usually come out ahead with our truck, especially when fuel is over $5/gallon.

Two-bedroom walk-up off Mission with a 6-foot back alley. They sized it right, brought a 17-foot shuttle, and finished in five hours. Final invoice came in under the binding estimate.
PCS to Norfolk on a tight DPS window. They handled the on-base gate paperwork, weighed the load with us watching, and the long-distance team had it on a USDOT truck by Wednesday. Knew the reimbursement paperwork cold.
Downsizing from a four-bedroom to a two-bedroom condo at 78. The crew sorted with us, dropped donations at AmVets on the way, and never once made us feel rushed. Worth every dollar.
